DJ Paul Oakenfold plays set at Stonehenge Stone Circle

The trance DJ, who has spent his summer working in Ibiza, performed his set at the World Heritage Site on Thursday – a closely guarded secret.

Just 50 people were allowed to attend the event which happened as the sun went down.

“I’m very lucky to get asked to perform and do a live show to sunset,” Oakenfold told the BBC.

The DJ, who has previously played at venues including the Great Wall of China and Base Camp at Mount Everest, admitted there had been “a lot of preparation”.

The question of Stonehenge’s origin has baffled the public imagination and scientists worldwide for more than a century.

Despite many years of archaeological research, very little is known about who erected stone formation and for what purpose.

Tests show 5,000-year-old remains found at the world heritage site came from more than 100 miles away in west Wales

But the scientific community could be on the verge of a major breakthrough thanks to an international collaboration with a group of scientists from the University of Oxford.

A new study published in the journal Scientific Reports looked at a number of ancient remains buried at the historic site more some 5,000 to 4,400 years ago.

Megalith tells stones’ secrets. New book focusses on the Wiltshire stone circles.

SOLSTICE morning marked both the longest day of the year and the release of new book Megalith: Studies in Stone that claims to reveal secret behind the mystery of the cosmology surrounding stone circle constructions like Avebury.

Megalith is the first global study into the stones at both Avebury and Stonehenge and megalthhas been penned by stone circle experts including Robin Heath, that focusses on the Wiltshire circles.

Among the insights in Megalith, the book argues that there were probably once 99 stones in the outer circle at Avebury.

Contributing author Robin Heath, author of 11 books on prehistoric and ancient sciences, said: “The eight contributing authors to Megalith have undertaken original research on the nature and purpose of megalithic monuments outside the boundaries of the present day archaeological model of prehistory. By completing a questionnaire as you walk around Stonehenge you can help archaeologists to understand how people from different backgrounds view the landscape. This will help with interpretations of important sites like Stonehenge. If you would like to take part, simply access the questionnaire via the QR code or URL below. All you need to do is fill in some information about yourself and answer the questions as best as you can.

Why does this research matter?

Archaeologists try to study past people who have very different cultural backgrounds from themselves. Certain perceptual theories suggest that this will cause us to see landscapes differently than the people we study, whilst others state that this is not an issue. If we see landscapes differently, then how we interpret them may not accurately reflect the past.

This special day offers an opportunity to raise the public’s awareness about the diversity of cultural heritage and the efforts that are required to protect and conserve it, as well as draw attention to its vulnerability.  Stonehenge and Avebury was inscribed onto the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1986, along with 6 other sites in the UK.

The astonishing result comes from analysis of DNA extracted from 400 ancient remains across Europe.

Stonehenge has a proud place in Britain’s history as one of the wonders of the world and the best-known prehistoric monument in Europe.

But, according to a major new study, modern-day Britons are barely related to the ingenious Neolithic farmers who built the monument 5,000 years ago.

Instead the British are related to the ‘Beaker people’ who travelled from modern-day Holland and all but wiped out Stonehenge’s creators.

The findings are ‘absolutely sort of mind-blowing,’ said archaeologist Barry Cunliffe, a professor emeritus at the University of Oxford.

‘They are going to upset people, but that is part of the excitement of it.
